Golf is a game that embodies self-discipline, sportsmanship, and respect. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or stepping on the golf course for the first time, understanding and practising proper golf etiquette is essential. In this blog, we explore those golf etiquette do’s and don’ts, ensuring you enjoy the game and avoid the shame!
Arrive on time: It may sound obvious, but punctuality shows respect for your fellow players and avoids unnecessary delays. You should aim to arrive at the course at least 20 minutes before your tee time to allow sufficient time to warm up and get organised.
Dress appropriately: Golf attire varies from course to course, but it’s essential to adhere to the dress code. Generally, you can’t go wrong with a collared shirt, tailored pants or shorts, and golf shoes. Tips would be to avoid wearing denim, t-shirts, and inappropriate footwear.
Stay quiet and still: Golf is a game that requires concentration. While on the course, minimise unnecessary noise and distractions to allow players to focus on their shots. Golfing’s best practice is to stand still and quietly when players take their swing.
Repair the course: Golf courses are meticulously maintained, and it’s up to every golfer to take care of them. Repairing divots by replacing the turf or using a divot repair tool is essential. Additionally, smooth out any footprints or ball marks on the greens using a divot repair tool and your foot.
Keep pace of play: Playing at a good pace ensures everyone’s enjoyment on the course. Be aware of the groups ahead of you and maintain a reasonable speed. If you need to catch up, let faster groups play through. Avoid unnecessary delays, such as lengthy discussions or excessive practice swings.
Be mindful of others: Golf is a social game, and respecting your fellow players is essential. Avoid walking in sight of others when they are about to hit, and keep your conversations to a minimum during someone’s shot. You should celebrate good shots but also be respectful when mistakes are made.
Don’t use your phone: Using your phone on the golf course is distracting for yourself and others. Avoid checking messages, making calls, or taking photos during the round. Keep it on silent or switch it off to fully immerse yourself in the game.
Don’t hit out of turn: Be patient and wait for your turn to hit. Hitting out of turn can cause confusion and disrupt the game’s flow. Follow the order of play and allow others their fair shot.
Don’t take too long searching for lost balls: Losing a golf ball happens to the best of us, but it’s important to hold up the game appropriately. Take a reasonable amount of time, typically 3-5 minutes, to search for your ball. If you cannot find it, proceed with a penalty stroke, and play a new ball.
Don’t walk through another player’s putting line: Be mindful of other players’ lines when walking on the green. Stepping on or across these lines can leave footprints, damage the grass, and affect the ball’s path. Make sure you walk around players’ lines to preserve the integrity of the greens.
Don’t throw clubs or swear: We all know Golf can be frustrating, but it’s important to maintain composure and respect for the course and other players. Don’t throw your clubs in anger, and avoid swearing (at least until you’re off the course!)
Adhering to proper golf etiquette is crucial for all players’ enjoyment and the course’s preservation. Following the dos and don’ts will enhance your golfing experience and contribute to a positive atmosphere on the course.
